Recently a promotion for artist’s oil paints was mailed to thousands of artists across the country. The extra large size featured paints at a super low price. They are said to be a great value, with strong pigment content. Any seasoned artist should be wary of such. Not all pigments cost the same. Titanium white is so inexpensive it is used in toothpaste. But the phthalo and quinacridone pigments are far more expensive. There is even a wide range of cost among the iron oxide colors, due to variations in processing. So what are you getting besides oil and pigment in these super cheap paints? Fillers, binders, extenders, additives and stabilizers. Don’t be fooled. The price of quality paints reflects the ingredients they are made from!
